What is it called when...

You take an existing story, characters, setting, and all that good stuff, and add your own characters and some of your own ideas to it? Is that what a fan-fiction is? What if the story you had in mind contains the absence of the original characters from the original story, and most of it consists of only your own characters, although there will be some mentioning of the original characters.
What I want to do is create a "Superman" story where my character is pretty much like Superman. She's from Krypton, she fell to Earth, has super strength, yadda yadda you know all that stuff. Well, maybe it's more of a "Super Girl" story lol. Anyways, Sup
